Bansko

Region:
Bulgaria

Bansko is Buglaria's premier ski resort. The town has been overrun by property developers; it looks like it's been repeatedly bombed, and touts sit outside the restaurants trying to drag you in like back in Vietnam. Prices for everything are far above the normal Bulgarian prices, even in supermarkets (the main supermarket being more expensive than all the mini markers). All in all, the city itself is not great.

That said, the skifield itself is pretty good. Conditions aren't brilliant at the moment (hard packed, not always good coverage) but it's still great fun and well worth the effort. Don't rent gear at the main place, it's more than double the prices available elsewhere, but $NZ50 per lift pass isn't too painful - although I'm hoping for much cheaper in Turkey and Iran.
