Cairo

Region:
Egypt

One of the largest cities in the world, and with a reputation for aggressive touts and heavy pollution, I didn't have great expectations for Cairo. Now that I've arrived, I'm finding it much better than I expected.

Cheap and tasty koshary (a mix of pasta, noodles, tomatoes, chickpeas and other delicious things) is readily available, as is sheesha (flavoured tobacco in great big water piles), Turkish coffee and other delicious snacks. Touts here, so far, tend to listen when you say no (in contrast to India, where you can't beat them off with a stick).
