Slovakia Kosice has a cute, old style heart, wrapped up in a disturbing number of huge communist era concrete apartment blocks of incredible ugliness. Only passed through overnight en route to Budapest, so not a lot to say, but it looks like it has potential for a longer stay.
As far as places to stay go, the K2 place you'll find in your guide books is excellent value. Hunt it down.
