Turpan

Region:
China

Lying below sea level and more or less are far as it is possible to be from the sea while remaining on the surface of earth, Turpan is known as China's hottest spot, ringing in the odd 47 in Summer months. We were lucky to escape with a few moderate 30-somethings, allowing for more pleasant excursions.

Like all Chinese cities, it would seem, Turpan is surrounded by a web of "attractions", most of which sound dubious and appear to be covered by a thick layer of tourists busses and their contents. I'd recommend the old city to the west, if you step of the main path you'll suddenly find yourself on beautifully empty paths; apparently the tours allow limited time :)
