Vientiane is the capital city of Laos. Home to somewhere around 150,000 people it's a much more pleasant and digestible size than Bangkok. Also drier, dirtier and hotter, but cheaper as well. Down by the river, and in the streets near by, are the best places to hang out. Lots of reasonably priced food and beer down by the Mekong, including a few boat restaurants.
