Mount Somers

Southern Alps, New Zealand. Mount Somers is a reasonably easy hike, if you avoid heading up to the summit, with two well equipped huts in which to stay. The track features a range of terrian, perhaps 40, in native bush and 60, up above the treeline in scrub. Beautiful views of the (somewhat bleak, but beautiful) Canterbury high country are well worth it, with the most impressive from the summit itself, if you can push yourself up that far!

Places to Stay

Woolshed Creek Hut

elyobo — Tue, 19/05/2009 - 9:11pm

Location:
Mount Somers
Price:
NZ$15/night for a bunk bed

One of the better huts in the NZ high country, the Woolshed Creek hut is located near swimming holes, has a chemical toilet available and a wood burner. I can't recall if there was gas available, but I think there way - there's an entry road to get there, so it's easy to resupply.

Can be very popular with groups on the weekends, be warned.
