Things to Do in Ayuthaya
Ayuthaya
One of the former capitals of Thailand, the main island of Ayuthaya seems to have more temples per square meter then anywhere else I've been... The main complexes loom large over the city, and can be easily spotted from any high point, while other smaller remains are scattered throughout the city, surprising the casual wanderer at almost every turn.
Things to Do
Chantharakasem National Museum
elyobo — Tue, 13/01/2009 - 9:43pm
Location:AyuthayaPrice:50 baht (I think)Ayuthaya has a small museum, with some items from the many wats and a display of items from the household of one of the old thai kings.
Entrance was free the day I went, but I suspect that it's normally 50 baht like most attractions in Ayuthaya.
Wat Phra Mahathat
elyobo — Tue, 13/01/2009 - 9:46pm
Location:AyuthayaPrice:50 bahtA large compound so strewn with stupas, buddhas, prangs and whatnot that I assumed it was compiled from various sites, Wat Phra Mahathat was the most interesting of the various ruins in Ayuthaya. Be sure to wander around the compound at night, as various monuments are lit up.
Entrance is 50 baht for foreigners, and is worth the fee.
Wat Phra Ram
elyobo — Tue, 13/01/2009 - 9:54pm
Location:AyuthayaPrice:50 baht (I think)Although worth a look from the outside, Wat Phra Ram isn't all that exciting compared to others in Ayuthaya. So long as foreigner pricing is maintained, you'd do better to spend you cash on other sites.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet
elyobo — Tue, 13/01/2009 - 9:51pm
Location:AyuthayaPrice:50 bahtWith three massive Ayuthaya style chedis, Wat Phra Si Sanphet provides one of the most common Ayuthaya photographs (you'll see my rendition in the Ayuthaya section). The complex is build on the former royal palace site, and has lasted better than the Royal Palace itself (which is now only foundations, and not of much interest).
Wat Ratburana
elyobo — Tue, 13/01/2009 - 9:49pm
Location:AyuthayaPrice:50 bahtNorth of Wat Phra Mahathat, Wat Ratburana is a smaller compound, but overall in better condition. The main prang is interesting for the two smaller chambers in which various valuables were originally buried. Descend the steep steps to check them out, although little remains aside from some faded murals in the bottom chamber.
Entrance is 50 baht for foreigners.
