Things to Do in Alexandria
Alexandria
Although it's not given much of a writeup by the guidebooks, Alexandria is definitely a worthwhile stopover, especially if you're on a longer trip. The city has a somewhat western feel to it, and due to the lack of international tourism the touts are few on the ground and reasonably laid back.
Things to Do
Biblioteca Alexandria
elyobo — Fri, 27/03/2009 - 12:10pm
Location:AlexandriaPrice:Various - 10 EGP entry + 20 each for two museums (all prices halved for students)The original Library of Alexandria, the greatest ever known, has long since been destroyed, but the modern replacement is worth checking out. Free tours run periodically throughout the day, ask at the information desk when you get in. The student discounts aren't advertised for the main entrance ticket (10 EGP / students 5 EGP) but ask and you'll get it.
Catacombs of Kom es-Soqafa
elyobo — Mon, 09/03/2009 - 8:21am
Location:AlexandriaPrice:35/20 EGP Adult/StudentThe Catacombs of Kom es-Soqafa are worth heading out to see; as Alex's tourist scene seems to be pretty quiet, you may
well have the place to yourself, adding to the spookiness. There are a few scattered remnants around the top of the
site, with one ground level tomb, but the main excitment is down the 35 metre shaft to the catacombs themselves.Kom el-Dikka
elyobo — Mon, 09/03/2009 - 8:31am
Location:AlexandriaPrice:20/15 EGP Full/StudentIf you haven't seen Roman ruins at all, go in and check them out, otherwise save yourself the entrance fee. A basic
amphitheatre and little else doesn't really justify the 20/15 adult/student entrance cost.Pompey's Pillar
elyobo — Mon, 09/03/2009 - 8:21am
Location:AlexandriaPrice:20/15 EGP Full/StudentPompey's Pillar is worth a look around, but not all that exciting. It's close to the Catacombs and is a good landmark
to spot so that you know when to get off the tram! The site is large, but there's not a lot to see aside from the
Pillar itself, a couple of sphinxes and a cave heading down underground. There were, however, a couple of locked doorsQuait Bey Fort
elyobo — Fri, 27/03/2009 - 12:23pm
Location:AlexandriaPrice:Overpriced, but can't recallThe fort itself doesn't look or sound all that exciting, and the foreigner pricing here is painful to behold. I think it's 25 Full / 15 Student. The walk along the corniche to get here is worth doing, however, so come on out anyway and take a tram back to town (25 piastre).
