Places to Stay in Damascus
Damascus
The capital of Syria, with a brilliant old town and souq, Damascus is worth at least a few days of your travel time. Unfortunately accommodation costs have risen to crazy levels (if you're a budget traveller), but most other things are cheap and wandering the old city, the souq and exploring the old houses and khans within is largely free.
Places to Stay
Al Haramain

Al-Marhabba
elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 6:47am
Lacking the atmosphere of places like Al-Rabie and Al-Haramain, the Al-Marhaba offers better value in most other ways. Doubles with bathroom are available for 1000; the ones on the fifth floor are marginally better than those on the third. Note also that the starting price will probably be at least 1200, but they'll come down quickly if you say you'll stay more than one night.
Al Rabie
elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 6:54am
Essentially a slighly nicer clone of Al Haramain, Al Rabie is slighltly up the road but similar in facilities and prices. Other travellers have mentioned that some of the staff can be quite creepy however, although this is likely to be a problem for women only.
Al Saada
elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 6:56am
Compared to the other favourites in the area, Al Saada is reasonably priced. Doubles for 800, dormitories for 350, all without breakfast or bathroom. It seemed that prices had rised when we returned, however.
