Deir ez-Zur

Deir ez-Zur (transliterated in at least ten different ways) is a great spot to base yourself to get a feel for the east. Numerous cheap eating places are available, good and inexpensive coffee and sheesha (nargileh) abound, and the people are friendly.

Places of Interest

  • Bus Station (Deir ez-Zur)

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

A fair way from town, if you're taking a taxi, the fare should be around 40 SYP.

  • Canalside Cafe

    elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 11:55pm

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

Very popular in the evenings when football is on, it's not a bad place to sit. Ensure that you know the prices beforehand (they're on the wall in Arabic, ask another customer to explain them), as we had some persistent attempts to overcharge here.

  • Coffee Shops

    elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 11:46pm

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

There are a couple of coffee shops on this little square near the Immigration and Passport office. They get busier in the mid evening, with good crowds until after midnight. Nargileh is 50 SYP and tea/coffee 15 SYP each. There's also a good icecream store on another corner (10 - 15 SYP).

  • Falafel Shop

    elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 11:46pm

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

Great falafel here! Ask for hummus, batengan and patatas with your falafel to get a truly delicious sandwhich (batengan is aubergine/eggplant, patatas are french fries). Sandwhiches are normally 20/25 (somewhat random pricing).

  • Good Fast Food

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

Decent fast food, if you can figure the pricing out. The guy staffing the fish section spoke some english and helped us to get things straight - 150 SYP gets you a good sized plate of meat, bread, salads and chips, selected from the trays down below. Pizza, juice and deserts are also available.

  • Immigration and Passport Office

    elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 11:51pm

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

Almost no english spoken, and more expensive than other places - 25 each for forms and 30 SYP for the extension itself.

  • Internet

    elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 11:51pm

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

There's internet here on the main square for 50 SYP/hr, but they won't let you use your laptop (blaming the police) and the net quality is patchy at best.

  • Microbus Station (Deir ez-Zur)

    elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 11:54pm

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

20 SYP from town. You'll need to get yourself signed off by the police before you go anywhere, although we did just sign on the standard register they have for locals one time and there was no problem.

There's a guy selling espresso coffee for 15 SYP, which is pretty reasonable - not bad if you grab a milo (also 15 SYP) and combine the two together.

  • River Side Cafe

    elyobo — Tue, 28/04/2009 - 11:46pm

    Location:
    Deir ez-Zur

It's got a great place, but poor and unfriendly service. Coffee and cokes are about 50 SYP each, but they let us turn up with a pile of our own food, so I guess I can live with the rest.
