Deir ez-Zur
Deir ez-Zur (transliterated in at least ten different ways) is a great spot to base yourself to get a feel for the east. Numerous cheap eating places are available, good and inexpensive coffee and sheesha (nargileh) abound, and the people are friendly.

Reasonably clean rooms, most with their own bathroom and cable TV. If they aren't busy, a tripple room with two people (bathroom + TV) goes for 800 SYP, which is a very reasonable deal. A single in a double room without bathroom and TV is 400, or 600 with a bathroom and TV.
Staff are friendly and helpful.

While the owner is friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, it's not quite enough to overcome all the dust, the terrible beds and the incredibly stinky toilets. 500 SYP for a double, 300 SYP for a single.
