Gilgit is, like everywhere else up in northern Pakistan, situated beside a river in a steep mountain valley. The hills are bleak, dry stone, but it's rumoured that there's good hiking nearby...

I stayed at the Kimpo Guesthouse, a new place, Korean owned. It's clean, brightly coloured and very quiet, with good Korean food available. 120 a night for a dorm is OK, but the food is a little expensive by Pakistani standards. The location is both a pro and a con; harder to get to and from, but very peaceful :)
