Shiraz

Located near the ruins of Persepolis (or Takht-e Jamshid in Farsi) and a beautiful city in it's own right, Shiraz is one of the must see cities on an Iranian tour. Fruit juice is readily available all over the place (compared to Esfahan, where sugary slushies seem to have won the day) and food is also easier to find, for some reason.

Things to Do

  • Arg-e Karim Khan

    Location:
    Shiraz
    Price:
    5000 IRR

The building itself is more interesting from the outside than from in, but it's cheap enough and there's an interesting photo exhibition from Shirazi history. The bath house in the corner was closed on our most recent visit, but it's also worth a quick look.

    • Castle
  • Museum

    Shiraz
    Price:
    5000 IRR

Haven't actually been in, but it's set in a basic garden and the entrance fee is 5000.

    • Museum
  • Naqshe-e Rajab

    elyobo — Fri, 26/06/2009 - 7:54pm

    Location:
    Shiraz
    Price:
    3000 IRR

Four reliefs carved into the stone; much less impressive than Naqshe-e Rostam, but if you're in the area, you might as well have a look.

    Price:
    5000 IRR

Four tombs of former Persian kings, with some impressive scenes carved into stone below. Not worth draggings yourself all the way out here from Shiraz for, but definitely worth adding on if you're coming to Persepolis anyway.

A long way from Shiraz and there's not a lot here to drag you this far; aside from the simple Tomb of Cyrus, the rest of the ruins are very far gone.

One of Iran's most famous sites, Persepolis (Takht-e Jamshid) is more significant for its history than for the site itself. The fine reliefs, showing the peoples of various conquered nations come to bring tribute, are the most interesting part of the site. Some parts were one, no doubt, incredible, but require more imagination these days as there is little left but column bases.

  • Shiraz Bazaar

    Shiraz

Pleasantly cool in the heat of the day (although many of the shops close around then anyway), it's another of the more attractive bazaars. Newer sections tend to be less attractive and hotter.

    • Market
  • Tomb of Hafez

    elyobo — Fri, 26/06/2009 - 8:00pm

    Location:
    Shiraz
    Price:
    5000 IRR

Iran's favourite poet is buried amidst gardens and pools here. They still take him very seriously indeed, and you'll hear his works recited and see people with tears in their eyes beside his grave. Come in the evening, when everything is well lit, to enjoy the atmosphere.
