Kashan

Kashan has some things well worth visiting that I hadn't come across elsewhere. Unfortunately the accomodation available is both overpriced and unappealing, so I recommend a hit and run technique, taking in as much as you can and getting back out again.

The restored old houses mentioned in the lonely planet are very much worth the effort of seeing. Like most "museums", prices have dropped so that foreigners pay the same prices as locals. Restoration seems to have come to a halt; when we visited in 2007, it was underway everywhere we went, but there doesn't seem to be much happening right now and little progress has been made since then.

Things to Do

  • Agha Bozorg

    Location:
    Kashan
    Price:
    3000 IRR

An old mosque and madrassah, this was undergoing restoration when I visited in 2007 and there wasn't a lot to see. Didn't get the chance to visit it again in 2009.

  • Fin Gardens

    Location:
    Kashan
    Price:
    5000 IRR

A pleasant walled garden with plenty of canals fed by a spring inside. Historically significant as the place where Amir Kabir was put to death, but worth visiting just to relax. Entrance fee is 5000 IRR for foreigners and the tea house will also try to charge special foreigner rates.

  • Kamal-ol-Molk Square

    Location:
    Kashan
    Price:
    Free

Just south of the Eastern end of the bazaar, Kamal al Molk Square is a popular spot for people to hang out during the early evenings, especially during the summer months. Drop in and sit down for a bit of people watching.

  • Khan-e Abbasian

    elyobo — Sat, 23/05/2009 - 11:28pm

    Location:
    Kashan
    Price:
    5000 IRR

Another of Kashan's restored old houses, Khan-e Abbasian is an enjoyable stroll through an almost completely restored house. Again, it seems like work has ground to a hault with a lot of the finer details incomplete, but it's still worth the entrance fee to have a look around.

    3000 IRR

Another of Kashan's restored old houses, work is ongoing (or possibly stalled) here. Apparently this is due to be turned into a boutique hotel, but there doesn't seem to have been much progress made between my first visit in 2007 and the most recent in 2009. Nonetheless, what has been fixed up is nicely done.

    Location:
    Kashan
    Price:
    3000 IRR in 2007

I didn't visit on the most recent visit, but it was popular enough to have tour groups streaming out the door as we went past. Similar to the others in most regards.

Another of Kashan's restored old houses, I haven't been inside this one though. Just marking it's presence here :)
