Just a last stopover point before the crossing into Iran really. That said, it seems to be nicer than the border towns on the other side, and the Erzurum Hotel, with a single person in a double room for 7 lira is decent value.
I also found the time to head up to the Ishak Pasha Sarayi (Palace) on the hills above town. Great views, beautiful location and a cool palace, worth the time. If you aren't in a hurry (as I was) you can walk up there, otherwise a taxi will go for 15 lira + half an hour waiting time.
