OK, feeling I've spent most of my time in Vietnam on the tourist trail I'm heading off the beaten track today. Once I figure out which bus station I need (every person I talk to tells me different things...) I'm heading to Ha Giang (said more like "Ha Zang"), from which I'll try to arrange a travel permit and organise a trip, possibly with guide, out to Dong Van and Meo Vac. Unless the weather's good, there's little point, as you're not allowed to hike anywhere, all you can do is see the (apparently best in Vietnam) scenery from the roads and towns; if the valleys are full of mist, then I can't see shite anyway.
