The Catacombs of Kom es-Soqafa are worth heading out to see; as Alex's tourist scene seems to be pretty quiet, you may
well have the place to yourself, adding to the spookiness. There are a few scattered remnants around the top of the
site, with one ground level tomb, but the main excitment is down the 35 metre shaft to the catacombs themselves.
Tickets are 35/20 for adult/student. Photography is not allowed at all, but they will look after your cameras for you at the ticket office.
It's easy to walk here from Pompey's Pillar - just turn right (west) out the entrance to the Pillar, then follow the road past a small square with a fruit market and it will soon be on your left. It should take between 5 to 10 minutes. As you go, just after the small square, look out for a small shop with rotisserie chicken outside. They also sell a sort of meat and vegetable calzone, which are delicious, and only 2.5 EGP each.
