Phanom Rung

Phanom Rung is probably the most impressive Khmer temple I've seen outside of Anghor Wat. Situated South East of Nang Rong, on top of a (small) extinct volcano, Phanom Rung has great views over the surrounding countryside and beautifully restored Khmer architecture.
Tickets are 100 baht for foreigners, 150 baht in a combination ticket for Meuang Tam. It's also worth dropping in on the visitor's centre there, as they have a small museum attached, detailing various ruins in the area and providing some interesting background on the reconstruction of Phanom Rung itself. While you're there, pick up the Phanom Rung flyer which provides details about the various portions of the ruins.
Within the site itself, numerous plaques provide background information, especially about the various scenes depicted on lintels and around the buildings. Take the time to read through them, it's worth it.
The grounds also contain a well maintained park, with large lawns and many shady trees. Take along a picnic, relax and make the most of the large fees you paid for entrance.
The road to the site is good and can be done by car or motorbike (the latter available from the Honey Inn in Nang Rong) and riding out here offers a view of the country and allows you to visit other sites in the area. Public transport is sometimes available, but you'll probably have to charter a motorcycle taxi at least part of the way.
